Mariechen Danz

erforscht in ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit den Körper sowie die Bedingungen von Körperlichkeit und untersucht Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Artikulation. Sie arbeitet mit Kostümen, Zeichnungen, Skulpturen und Installationen und aktiviert diese im Rahmen von inszenierten Performances, bei denen der Stimme eine zentrale Rolle zukommt. Die gebürtige Irin studierte an der Universität der Künste, Berlin, an der Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam und am California Institute of the Arts, wo sie 2008 mit einem MA in Art & Integrated Media abschloss. Ihre Arbeit war in Einzelausstellungen in der GAK – Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, am CAN Centre d’Art Neuchâtel und im Kunstverein Göttingen sowie weltweit im Rahmen von Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen, unter anderem am Palais de Tokyo in Paris, im Kunsthaus Bregenz, im New Museum, New York, in der Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck, am Centre Pompidou Paris und 2017 auf der Biennale in Venedig. Die Künstlerin war Stipendiatin des Arbeitsstipendiums des Berliner Senats (2016) und erhielt das Karl Schmitt-Rottluff Stipendium (2014) und den Villa Romana Preis (2013).

In Western societies a newly discovered and very lively interest in magical practices and occult knowledge can be witnessed. The magical seems to be evolving into a popular phenomenon that affects society as a whole and is also becoming the subject of intense debate in artistic and academic-scientific contexts. The book Real Magic investigates the current realities of the magical in the contemporary arts, sciences and everyday culture. It explores the present Western residues and forms of magical practices, the current potentials of magical perception and thinking in a world largely determined by financialised instrumental reason, and also the drawbacks of occultism. The publication is the result of the fourth annual programme of the cx centre of interdisciplinary studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.
