Ursula Biemann

ist Künstlerin, Autorin und Video-Essayistin, sie lebt in Zürich. Ihre künstlerische Arbeit ist forschungsorientiert und umfasst Feldforschung an abgeschiedenen Orten, wo sie die politischen Ökologien von Wäldern, Öl und Wasser recherchiert. In ihrer Videopraxis verschränkt sie weite filmische Landschaften mit dokumentarischem Filmmaterial, Science-Fiction-Poesie und akademischen Untersuchungen zu einer Erzählung der sich verändernden planetaren Realität. Ihre Videoarbeiten wurden bei den internationalen Kunst-Biennalen in Istanbul, Liverpool, Sevilla, Shanghai, Gwangiu, Montreal und Venedig gezeigt und sind weltweit in Museen vertreten. 2013 hatte sie eine Einzelausstellung im Neuen Berliner Kunstverein n.b.k. Biemann ist Herausgeberin von Stuff it – The Video Essay in the Digital Age und anderen Büchern. Sie studierte an der School of Visual Arts und dem Whitney Independent Study Program in New York und ist Gründungsmitglied des kollaborativen Kunst- und Medienprojekts World of Matter. 2008 wurde ihr die Ehrendoktorwürde an der schwedischen Universität Umeå verliehen, 2009 erhielt sie den Schweizer Meret-Oppenheim-Preis. www.geobodies.org

Timothy Morton

hat den Rita Shea Guffey Chair für englische Literatur an der Rice University in Houston, Texas, inne. Er arbeitete bereits mit Björk, Laurie Anderson, Jennifer Walshe, Jeff Bridges, Sabrina Scott, Ólafur Elíasson und Pharrell Williams zusammen. Mit Jeff Bridges schrieb er das Drehbuch zu Living in the Future’s Past (2018), einen Film zur globalen Erderwärmung, in dem er auch erscheint. Er ist der Autor von Being Ecological (2018), Humankind: Solidarity with Nonhuman People (2017), Dark Ecology: For a Logic of Future Coexistence (2016), Nothing: Three Inquiries in Buddhism (2015), Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (2013), Realist Magic: Objects, Ontology, Causality (2013), The Ecological Thought (2010), Ecology without Nature (2007) sowie von acht weiteren Büchern und 200 Aufsätzen zu Philosophie, Ökologie, Literatur, Musik, Kunst, Architektur, Design und Essen. Seine Werke wurden in zehn Sprachen übersetzt. 2014 hielt er die Wellek-Vorlesungsreihe in Theorie am Critical Theory Institute, University of California, Irvine.

The notion of ecology not only figures centrally in current debates around climate change, but also traverses contemporary discourses in the arts, the humanities, and the social and techno sciences. In its present reformulation it refers to the multi-layered and multi-dimensional nexus of reciprocities between living processes, technological and media practices, i.e. to the complex relations of human and nonhuman agents. The book Hybrid Ecologies understands ecology as an ambivalent notion, whose multivalence opens up new fields of action and yet, thanks precisely to this openness and vast applicability, at the same time raises questions not least concerning its genealogy. The interdisciplinary contributions seek to explore the political and social effects that a rethinking of community in ecological and thus also in biopolitical terms may provoke, and which consequences the contemporary notion of ecology might entail for artistic and design practices in particular. The present publication is the result of the fifth annual program of the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies, which was conceived in cooperation with the Chair of Philosophy | Aesthetic Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
